Today I’m so excited to unveil a brand new about page for Alex Collier Design!
The biggest difference between the old page and the new and improved version? The words! This new page is a total rehaul of my about page’s copy to speak more directly to my ideal clients and get more clarity on who I am and what I do.
I was able to rewrite all this copy in just a few days using a Promptlate from Jessica Paxson of Jess, XO. I was lucky enough to snag a spot on Jess’s beta tester board, but The Promptlate Shop officially launches TODAY! The Promptlate Shop is a tool to help you combat cookie-cutter copy syndrome, and get the right words UP in no time.
(Prompt + Template = Promptlate, get it?)
The Promptlate Shop makes writing words for your website easy and affordable. Today, I’m sharing the three reasons why you should use a Promptlate for your website copy. Let’s dive in!
1. It’s the perfect middle ground between hiring a copywriter and DIY
Let’s be real, many creative entrepreneurs (especially those just starting out) simply can’t afford the cost of a copywriter. Instead, we put on one of our many entrepreneur hats and say: “I can do it myself!” It’s not until we sit in from of that blank screen and blinking cursor that we realize it’s much easier said than done!
Writing is challenging for most people, but writing about yourself can seem impossible. Turning the million jumbled thoughts about our businesses into cohesive, engaging paragraphs? Forget about it.
The Promptlate Shop is the “word” equivalent to using a Showit template for your website. It’s a professional getting you halfway there, giving you guidance in the form of structure.
Writing about yourself and your business is SO MUCH EASIER when you have specific prompts to answer! I also love that Jess includes plenty of sentence stems in the Promplates, which helps get the ol’ juices flowing. (Can you tell she’s a fellow former teacher?)
2. Your website copy informs your design
As a website designer, nothing makes me cringe harder than when someone tells me they want a website designed and they’ll write the copy later.
NO! Never do this! (pretty please?)
Copy informs design. In other words, you should have most of your website copy written before designing your website. Without the words, there’s nothing to design! Of course, you can design your website before writing the words, but I promise your website will be MUCH stronger if the copy comes first.
The Promptlate Shop makes it easy for you to write your website copy before starting a redesign. The Promptlate Shop offers Promptlates for your home, services, and about pages—the most visited and most important pages on your website.
3. The Promptlates are so easy to use!
Remember how I said a Promptlate is a combination of prompts and templates? Let me explain!
You’ll access your Promptlate as a Google Doc. It’s super easy to just type directly in the doc—no weird files to download and open in a program that you may or may not even have on your computer.
The first section of a Promptlate is the prompts. The prompts are broken up into sections, like “who you serve + what you do.” In each section, there are 5-10 questions digging in deep to your business.
The next step is choosing and completing a template. Yep, that’s right, there’s more than one template in each Promptlate. For my about page, I chose to use “the inspiring intro” template. Jess explains on video in the Promptlate how to choose which template will best fit you and your business.
The templates are broken down into sections and refer you back to specific prompts that will help you write each section. This was probably my favorite thing about the whole experience. So simple and easy!
The final step is editing and formatting your copy. Jess has another awesome video explaining how to do this. I found it helpful to “chunk” my content into what I knew would eventually be sections of my website.

I would highly recommend The Promptlate shop to anyone looking to revamp their website copy, and especially to anyone considering investing in custom website design.
I hope this post offers a helpful look at The Promptlate Shop and how easy it can be to write words that work for your website. Head on over to Jess’s site to check out The Promptlate Shop for yourself (and give Jess a big ol’ launch day hug for me).
